Lunch & Undergraduate Economics Career Exploration Event
Friday, April 5 from 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m. in Engineering 2, room 499. How about a free lunch while you learn of the young career path of a UCSB & CalPoly economist? Join us as Reed Kamsler, data scientist at UBER answers your questions and gives us insight into post graduate opportunities for newly graduated economists.
This event is open to our family of economics declared and proposed majors, and will feature a presentation by Reed Kamsler followed by a question & answer period driven by you.
Reed Kamsler is a data scientist on the business economics team at UBER. He earned a B.A. in economics and accounting at UC Santa Barbara and then pursued an M.S. in quantitative economics at Cal Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Reed directly applies many of the skills learned in his master’s program in his day-to-day work. The Economics Department offers you a unique opportunity—a field study program associated with the major while satisfying the PR-S general education requirement. You can receive up to 10 units of credit* (most internships are five-units with the option of doing a two-unit internship) while gaining valuable work experience and exploring potential career paths. Field study is open to M.S. students as well as declared UC Santa Cruz undergraduate juniors and seniors in economics, global economics, business management economics and our combined majors who have successfully completed Econ 100A/M, 100B/N, and 113. Participants** must be in good academic standing, and field study is available as pass/no pass grading only.
* The units earned through field study participation are applied towards units required to graduate, they do not count towards any major requirements.
** Please be advised that F-1 scholars may need to take a few extra steps and we recommend checking in with ISSS about CPT status.

René also passes on her real-world experience to students as an adjunct public relations professor at San Jose State University.

Hear from SupplyShift project manager Meredith Kiyomura and career coach/UCSC alumna Yolanda Garcia as they share their experiences and advice for the future. In 2014, he chaired an expert panel to revise and strengthen the monetary policy framework of the reserve bank. The final report proposed the inflation-targeting framework implemented by the RBI in 2016. Dr. Patel is an expert on monetary policy and financial sector reform. Join us as Hector Gonzalez, UCSC alum, answers your questions and gives us the inside information of working in economics fields.
This event is open to economics declared and proposed majors and M.S. APEF students, and will feature a presentation by Alum Hector Gonzalez followed by a question & answer period driven by you.Hector Gonzalez grew up in Mexico. During his studies at the community college, he actively engaged in student government. He transferred to UC Santa Cruz as a junior and earned his B.A. in business management economics. While at UC Santa Cruz, Hector interned both as part of the field study program and independently. He worked at Wells Fargo prior to joining the Office of David J. Teece in the East Bay, where he provides financial analysis and manages the bookkeeping. Hector continues to remain an active member in his local community.

The VITA program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. You will receive training to provide free tax help for low-to-moderate income families who need this assistance. If you qualify for our field study program, you may also be able to earn units and satisfy the PR-S general education requirement.
