  • M.S. APEF Department Orientation

  • Fall Job & Internship Fair – Hosted by the UC Santa Cruz Career Center

    Wednesday, October 24, 2018 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the West Field House. Network with a variety of companies hiring for full-time positions and internships! From science and technology, to nonprofits and local organizations, the Fall Job & Internship Fair has something for everyone whether it's an internship, gap year program, or a post-graduation career.

    This event is open to all programs and majors at UC Santa Cruz.

    On the day of the event remember to:

    1. Dress professionally
    2. Bring your student ID (Alumni need to contact fairs@ucsc.edu 5+ days in advance)
    3. Bring multiple copies of your resume
    4. Be ready to discuss full-time jobs and internships (research attending companies that interest you)

  • Lunch & Economics Career Exploration Event

    Friday, October 26, 2018 from 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m. in Engineering 2, room 499. Are you interested in a free lunch and to hear real life advice and tips from a fellow alum? Join us as Hector Gonzalez, UCSC alum, answers your questions and gives us the inside information of working in economics fields. 

    This event is open to economics declared and proposed majors and M.S. APEF students, and will feature a presentation by Alum Hector Gonzalez followed by a question & answer period driven by you.

    Hector Gonzalez grew up in Mexico.  During his studies at the community college, he actively engaged in student government.  He transferred to UC Santa Cruz as a junior and earned his B.A. in business management economics.  While at UC Santa Cruz, Hector interned both as part of the field study program and independently.  He worked at Wells Fargo prior to joining the Office of David J. Teece in the East Bay, where he provides financial analysis and manages the bookkeeping.  Hector continues to remain an active member in his local community.

  • Winter Quarter Econ 294B Applied Economics and Finance Seminar Series

    Fridays, January 11-March 15. This Friday series is a feature of the M.S. APEF program to prepare you for the job market, and will be hosted by Rob Fairlie. We'll begin with some basics on resume, cover letter and interview skills, OPT status, and bring in guests--alumni, economists, data analysts, financial analysts and HR specialists to introduce you to career opportunities and strategies.

  • Drop-in Resume Review and Speed Interviews

    Friday, February 22 from 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. in Engineering 2, room 405F. Get your resume polished and drop in to meet Reed Kamsler, economist and data scientist Uber. He'll be presenting later at the 294B class, and will share his insight into post graduate opportunities for M.S. APEF students and the rigorous application process at Uber.
    Reed Kamsler is a data scientist on the business economics team at UBER.  He earned a B.A.  in economics and accounting at UC Santa Barbara and then pursued an M.S. in quantitative economics at Cal Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.  Reed directly applies many of the skills learned in his master’s program in his day-to-day work.  He hopes he can pass along what he’s learned about working as an economist in Tech. 
    Meetings will be limited to 15 minutes. No reservation required. Open to M.S. APEF students and economics Ph.D. job market candidates only.

  • Networking Workshop

    Monday, May 13th from 4:00 - 5:00pm in Engineering 2, Room 499.

    Looking for jobs, career advice, connections? (Net)Work it! Gather information about industries and discover options that are a good match to your interests, values and skills. Uncover opportunities that are not on job boards! But, where to start? 

    Let us help de-mystify the process and give you some ideas on where to start. Join René Shimada Siegel, Connext CEO and San Jose State University PR adjunct professor, as she talks about her journey that began in college. 

    René is extremely passionate about empowering colleagues and advocating for the next generation. She is the CEO of Connext, Silicon Valley’s marketing and communications contractor agency. For two decades, her company has made life easier for hundreds of technology clients with specialized contractors ranging from recent grads to senior strategists. Current clients include Adobe, LinkedIn, Google, Salesforce, and Tesla. René also passes on her real-world experience to students as an adjunct public relations professor at San Jose State University. 

    This event is open to economics declared and proposed majors and M.S. APEF students, and will feature a presentation by René Shimada Siegel followed by a question & answer period driven by you. Refreshments will be provided.

  • Salary Negotiation Panel

    Monday, May 20th from 4:00 - 5:00pm in Engineering 2, Room 499.

    You should be paid what you're worth. Learn how to navigate salary negotiations as a young professional at the Salary Negotiation Panel. Hear from SupplyShift project manager Meredith Kiyomura and career coach/UCSC alumna Yolanda Garcia as they share their experiences and advice for the future. Light refreshments provided at the end with favorable RSVP. 

    From baking in vegan kitchens, to being a real life faerie, and ending (currently) at a tech start up,Meredith Kiyomura has an eclectic work history. All of her positions have taught her the value of self worth, how to be your own advocate, and knowing how to work your strengths. She is honored to be sharing her knowledge with future leaders and innovators from UCSC.
    Yolanda Garcia is a UC Santa Cruz alumna who currently works at the UC Santa Cruz Career Center as a career coach and has an extensive background in Human Resources. She is delighted to offer guidance to students and looks forward to connecting and speaking candidly about the negotiation process.
